DECOR & CLOTHING The 'toga' was the main outer garment worn my the Roman citizen - as a civilian costume. The army wore a military cloak instead. The Emporer would wear a purple toga (or have purple in it). The other wealthy Romans wore one of white and those of a lesser status wore dark-coloured ones. A woman wore a 'palla', which was a similar outer garment sometimes draped over her head. It was short enough to show the decorative hem of the robe beneath - which was gathered into two belts, one below the breast and the other around the hips to create a hanging fold. They loved bright colourful stoned jewellery and cameos. |

The gladiator generally wore a wrap-around, in the style of a skirt with a thick belt. Beneath their battle armour the Roman soldier wore a short tunic. The metal strips over the top in a form of 'skirt' were worn for noise as much as anything else - to frighten the barbarians as they marched into war. For more ideas look at the Emporer's Party section. ****** For the decor it would be easiest to use drapes of material and cushions to lie on. With tables decorated with long strips of ivy. |
